El Camino Elementary School students in the Autism Program participated in a Color Me Mine Project, in which students engaged in sensory, social, and emotional development.  This project promoted mental and emotional growth, a means for self-expression, interaction and connections with peers and fostered teamwork, cooperation, and a sense of expression. Through participating in this art project, students had the opportunity to foster their development in receptive language and listening skills by following the directions given to them by the El Camino Special Education Support Staff and Color Me Mine staff, to create their own tile that would contribute to the collaborative mosaic.  Through the use of textures, paint and art tools the project stimulated the sensory processing needs of many of our students.

El Camino opened their doors to District guests and parents to share in the unveiling of this work of art.  During the ceremony, the audience learned about the transformation that has been taking place in our Autism Program.  Some of the positive aspects of the program that were highlighted include, the STAR Lab which provides our students with 1:1 instruction and focuses on individual students’ needs, and the Motor Lab, which provides our students with opportunities for fine motor and large motor activities to address their sensory needs and prepare their bodies for learning.  The ceremony ended with the unveiling of the Color Me Mine Mosaic which represents our belief in developing an inclusive, diverse community that promotes unity and celebrates abilities.
