OMSD District-Wide Spelling Bee
The Ontario-Montclair District Spelling Bee program is dedicated to building strong foundational literacy skills, boosting student confidence, and celebrating academic excellence in a fun, supportive environment across our community.
The spelling bee pathway prepares students not just to compete, but to excel in public speaking, critical thinking, and advanced vocabulary.
The Spelling Bee PathwayThe spelling bee journey consists of four progressive stages, leading students from their local schools to the district, county, and ultimately the national level.
- School-Site Spelling Bees: Students first participate in spelling competitions at their individual school sites. Winners advance to the district-wide competition.
- Ontario-Montclair School District Spelling Bee: The top spellers from each school site compete in the OMSD Spelling Bee to determine our district champion.
- SBCSS County Spelling Bee: The top-placing students from the district level earn the opportunity to represent OMSD at the SBCSS (San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools) County Spelling Bee.
- Scripps National Spelling Bee: The top spellers from the county competition earn the prestigious opportunity to represent San Bernardino County at the national level in Washington, D.C.
The Selection and Progression Process
- School-Level Recruitment & Selection: Information and study lists are provided to schools in the fall. Students interested in participating sign up through their school's Spelling Bee Site Representative.
- School-Site Competitions: Held in November and December, these initial bees determine the representatives who will advance to the district level.
- District Competition: Held in winter, this event brings together school winners from across Ontario-Montclair to compete for the district championship.
- County Representation: The top school site spellers qualify to advance to the SBCSS County Spelling Bee, competing against students from across the county.
- National Representation: Champions at the county level win the chance to advance and compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Program Implementation
Our spelling bee program is supported at both the elementary and secondary levels to ensure continuous growth across our district.
We encourage parents to support their spellers by quizzing them at home, attending our parent information sessions, and cheering them on during the school-wide and district competitions!
