At Ontario-Montclair School District, our top priority is ensuring every student has access to a world-class education in a safe, respectful, and welcoming school environment. We remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering a sense of belonging for all students, while enforcing the protection, safety, and privacy of our students and families, regardless of background or circumstance.
To many members of our OMSD community, the current political and immigration landscape may bring uncertainty, concern, and anxiety. In these times, we want to reassure you that our schools remain places of learning, support, and safety for every student. Compassion, inclusivity, and respect are at the heart of everything we do, and we continue to stand by our diverse and vibrant school communities.
The U.S. Supreme Court has long upheld the right of all children to receive a free public education, regardless of immigration status, as outlined in the landmark case Plyler v. Doe. Additionally, per Assembly Bill 699, OMSD, like all school districts in the state, does not collect information regarding the immigration status of families, nor do we gather social security numbers. This policy is in place to ensure that all students can access their right to an education without fear or intimidation. As such, OMSD does not have any relevant information related to immigration status and will not participate in any federal immigration investigations on our campuses. We will uphold our commitment to the right to privacy and make every effort to minimize disruptions to our schools.
As part of our unwavering dedication to student safety, we have clear and established protocols in place. Any request for access to a student or school campus must follow our District’s strict safety procedures, including:
- All visitors must continue to undergo our strict procedures, including an identification process, before gaining access to school grounds.
- Parents/guardians will be informed as required when any official request involves their child.
- Our staff is trained to follow all safety protocols to ensure the well-being of students.
We encourage our families to reach out if they have any concerns or need additional support. School counselors and District resources are available to assist students and families who may be experiencing uncertainty. Below we have included some resources that you may find helpful as you navigate the recent political developments raising concerns about immigration policies, protections, and the rights of students and families.
